ATS-100-231 picture. This starter has been used on many turbine engines, P&W FT/GG/JT-3, Orenda OTF-3, Rolls Royce Avon, and GE J79/LM1500 Great little starters, if you keep the oil fresh.

This brings back old memories of the F4-D and the starting system. We had two ways of starting the engine, one was the ever popular bleed air form the -60 cart and the other the not so popular cartridge can start. The B-52 use the same "air in can" system. You can't miss it the smoke from the powder envelops the whole airplane and you develop a nagging cough. Yup we had the same thing on the F4-D's and twice a year whether we wanted to or not we would load the cart start system and light it off. I remeber many times having to jump up on the -60 cart or the nearest maintenance stand to avoid the flying debris. The starter would not take the cart starts too many times before the impeller would grenade and pieces would shoot out. The only way you tell the starter took a s_it was the sparks the pieces made when they flew out from under the airplane. You know the type oif airplane I am talking about the ones fully fueled, and armed with bombs. I never like using "air in can" it just was too dangerous.

They are great little units when the inlet pressure is limited to 40 psig or under, converted to constant lube, and occasionally checked over. The local gas company have some that are 38 years old, and never touched. (In service the whole time.)
